Flights cancelled, federal offices closed ahead of winter storm Janus

The next winter storm taking aim at the Eastern Seaboard has grounded thousands of flights and closed federal government buildings for the day.

ABC News notes that federal government offices in the Washington D.C. area are closed Tuesday and FlightAware.com announced that nearly 2,000 U.S. flights have been cancelled because of the storm.

Dubbed as Janus, the winter storm could drop as much as a foot of snow to some parts of the Northeast.

Beyond the snowstorm that is expected to affect millions of travelers during the evening commute, is another shot of Arctic air and frigid temperatures much like what we experienced three weeks ago.

“It’s a two-pronged system. Not only are we getting the hard-hit snow but bitterly cold wind chills," said The Weather Channel meteorologist Jim Cantore, reporting from Washington D.C. "Brutal, brutal winter weather here today.”

Many schools along the Northeast corridor have also closed in preparation of what Janus may bring.
