Former Dallas Cowboy player Josh Brent was found guilty of intoxication manslaughter on Wednesday stemming from the December 2012 accident.
The accident killed Brent's friend and teammate Jerry Brown, reports The Associated Press. The former NFL player could receive up to 20 years in jail, but could also get a lenient punishment of probation when sentencing begins Thursday.
When the jury read out the verdict, Brent's family quietly cried and Brown's mother, Stacey Jackson, left without commenting. She has said previously she might help lobby for a lighter sentence as she has forgiven Brent.
It took the jury nine hours split between two days to come to the guilty verdict.
As previously reported, Brent and Brown were out driving on Dec. 8, when the car flipped after hitting a curb at high speed. Brent was found at the scene attempting to pull his friend's body from the crash.
Irving, Texas police say that Brent's blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit. According to KMSP-TV, prosecutors said that the accident is "almost like a poster child case for intoxication manslaughter."
