Former mob boss James "Whitey" Bulger, who evaded arrest for almost two decades before getting arrested in 2011, was able to exchange love notes with his girlfriend Catherine Greig on a legal pad provided by his defense attorney.
Greig is serving eight years behind bars for harboring a fugitive; helping Bulger run from federal prosecutors for 15 years.
Attorney J.W. Carney Jr. told a crowd of Massachusetts defense lawyers that after Bulger expressed sadness for fear he wouldn't ’e permitted to talk to Greig ever again, he provided his legal pad for the two to have a form of communication.
Boston Globe reports after getting approval to visit Greig, where she’s in federal custody in Rhode Island, he provided her with the letter Bulger wrote. She wrote a reply on the note, and Carney said they both cried when reading their respective letters.
"To me there is no regulation or law that should prevent people from expressing love," said Carney.
In November, Bulger was sentenced to two life sentences plus five years and convicted on 31 of 32 counts. Before going on the run, Bulger led a a criminal enterprise in South Boston from the 1970s to the 1990s, selling drugs and taking advantage of corrupt FBI and government officials.
