The former Virginia Governor Robert McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, were indicted by a federal grand jury on Tuesday on accepting bribes and fraud.
The McDonnells are being charged with 14 counts, with the majority stemming accepting loans and bribes from the former CEO of dietary supplements maker Star Scientific Inc, reports Reuters.
They allegedly received gifts and money. Some of the improper gifts they are believed to have received include cash, clothing and golf fees. The bribes helped the company to set up meetings with government officials who might be able to help Star Scientific with their business.
According to The New York Times, after the bribes were discovered, the governor said they were simply loans and he would be repaying Jonnie Williams Sr.
The fraud charges are because the McDonnells didn't properly include the loans received by Williams on loan applications.
McDonnell and his wife have long denied doing anything illegal and he said in a statement, "We did not violate the law, and I will use every available resource and advocate I have for as long as it takes to fight these false allegations."
