On Wednesday a Livingston, Calif. Foster Farms chicken plant was closed after U.S. Department of Agriculture inspectors discovered a cockroach infestation.
The plant is shutdown while the plant carries out "enhanced sanitizing," reports The Associated Press. Federal inspectors had witnessed cockroaches in the plant five times during inspections over a four-month period.
Cockroaches were even witnessed near a hand-washing station during one inspection.
The plant was closed for "sanitation and treatment" as food safety is "its highest priority," Foster Farms said.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Foster Farms had claimed it was going to make sure the plant and two in Fresno were cleaned up and the plants remained open after Foster Farms came up with an acceptable sanitation plan back in 2013 over salmonella concerns in its poultry products.
Foster Farms said on Wednesday, "The plant treatment took place this afternoon and the company expects to full resume operation once approved for inspection."
