German Chancellor Angela Merkel was injured in a ski accident in the Swiss Alps. Merkel was cross-country skiing when the accident occurred.
German Spokesperson Steffen Seibert told the Associated Press, “The doctors’ orders are to lie down.” Seibert said that she had cancelled a visit on Wednesday to Warsaw, Poland.
Last week, Merkel sent wishes for a speedy recovery to German Formula One legend Michael Schumacher, the successful race car driver who endured bran surgery after suffering a head injury while downhill skiing in France.
Doctors have ordered bed rest for three weeks for Merkel, 59, after finding that she had an “incomplete” bone fracture. It is anticipated that she will be making a full recovery. Sources say she will be walking with the assistance of a walking aid, and will continue her busy schedule which includes cabinet and government meetings.
According to CNN, Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union will be delaying its party retreat, originally slated for Jan. 10 – 11.
Angela Merkel began her term as Chancellor of Germany in 2005.
