Karl Baumgartner will be honored with the Berlinale Camera this February at The Berlin Film Festival. Filmmaker Aki Kaurismaki and Berlin Festival director Dieter Kosslick will acknowledge Baumgartner for his life’s work.
Baumgartner’s work as a producer and distributor has been pivotal in the success of movies like Jane Campion’s The Piano. Baumgartner’s company, Pandora Film, has distributed a number of successful, international films since its inception in 1982, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Pandora executive produced Emir Kusturica'sUnderground, winner of the Palme d'Or in 1995. Baumgartner's films have also appeared at the Berlin Film Festival. Recent films entered into the festival include Sam Garbarski's Irina Palm, Jasmila Zbanic’s On the Path, Edwin's Postcards from the Zoo, and Pia Marais' Layla Fourie.
According to Variety, Baumgartner walked the red carpet in 2012 at the Rome Film Festival with the Russian epic, Waiting for the Sea, a movie that embraced magical realism.
Baumgartner will receive his Berlinale Camera at a ceremony on Saturday, Feb. 8.
