Gravity, one of the most visually stunning films produced by Hollywood in recent memory, dominated the Visual Effects Society nominations, as expected. The film was so dominant that Sandra Bullock’s character was nominated for Outstanding Animated Character, even though she’s one of the few parts of the movie not created with a computer.
The film, directed by Alfonso Cuaron, was nominated for the society’s top prize, Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Picture. The other nominees in the category are Iron Man 3, Pacific Rim, Star Trek Into Darkness and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.
Bullock’s character Ryan was included in the Outstanding Animated Character in a Live Action movie category. However, she’s up against some huge competition, like the dragon Smaug in The Hobbit and a Kaiju monster in Pacific Rim. Oz The Great and Powerful’s China Girl was also nominated.
Gravity’s interior and exterior environments were nominated for Outstanding Created Environment in a live action movie. It also scored nods for Virtual Cinematography, Outstanding Models, Outstanding FX and Simulation Animation in a live action movie, and Outstanding Compositing.
The films nominated for Outstanding Supporting Visual Effects are Rush, Lone Ranger, Great Gatsby, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, White House Down and The Wolf of Wall Street.
Cuaron will also be presented with the Visionary Award.
The 12th annual VES Awards are set for Feb. 12 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Gravity is back in theaters this weekend and you can check out our review here.
