Harvey Weinstein wants to take down the National Rifle Association in a new movie, but he’s going to have a hard time convincing people that the man who produced violent films like Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction is really serious about it. The right is already blasting him for being a hypocrite, so in response, he said that he’ll cut down on violent films.
“I can't do it,” the Oscar winner told CNN’s Piers Morgan. “I can't make one movie and say this is what I want for my kids, and then just go out and be a hypocrite.”
Weinstein’s comments come after he made headlines Thursday by threatening to make a movie exposing the NRA with Meryl Streep. He didn’t reveal any details, but it was later reported that it will be called The Senator’s Wife and aims to expose how the NRA used Washington to stop gun control laws.
The August: Osage County producer told Morgan that “the movie will be entertaining” and insisted that it will be like 1939’s Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, which exposed corrupt politics. For Weinstein's film, Streep will play the Mr. Smith-esque role.
“I know the power of what a movie can do...because a movie can galvanize a country,” he said.
Weinstein added that he doesn’t have an issue with war movies like Lone Survivor, since those are true stories. But Quentin Tarantino may need a new producer for his future projects. “I'm not going to make some crazy action movie just to blow up people and exploit people,” he said.
