A 14-year old girl from Mundelein, Illinois was arrested for murdering her 11-year old half sister after an argument.
According to Chicago Tribune, the teenager, whose name has not been released, had been angry with her sister, Dora Betancourt, over the past week because, even though she had cooked dinner multiple nights in a row and did chores around, the 11-year old was still unappreciative. On January 20 the girls got into a physical altercation where the teenager was hit by her younger sister.
The next morning after their mother, a single parent, left for work, the teen, still angry from the previous night's argument, laid in her bed and pondered the thought of getting back at her sister. After “about 10 or 15 minutes” of deliberation, the teen got up, grabbed a knife from the kitchen, and entered her sister's room. Dora tried to fight, but the 14-year old wound up stabbing her sister over 30 times, telling the girl that she was ungrateful with each stab.
CNN reported that, after the attack, the girl took a shower to wash the blood off and called her mother, telling her that an intruder broke into the house and attacked her sister. She then did as her mother told her and called the police, telling them the same story. When police informed her that strands of her hair had been found in her sister's hands, she decided to tell the truth.
When made aware of the crime, members of the community were in an outrage. "They would always be together. The older one would be taking care of the younger one, and vice versa," a shocked neighbor said. Friends of the girls were even surprised by the crime, because the girls were known to be close.
The teenager is scheduled to appear again in juvenille court on January 31.
