It has been three years since the last case of polio reported in India. It seems that the country has finally managed to beat polio after decades of effort.
The healthcare system has been overrun with many health problems, like polio, in which they have not been able to find cures for or they simply have not been able to act fast enough. According to BBC, in 2009, India reported 741 polio cases. The last reported case of polio was in 2011 in which an 18 month old baby girl contracted the disease.
The country has faced many challenges when it came to getting rid of the disease. High birth rate, poor sanitation, diarrhea and reluctance of the population to treatments all stood in the way of India and getting rid of the disease.
The Times of India described India’s Polio Program as the biggest public health success story in India’s history.
"We have completed a full three years without a single polio case and I'm sure that in the future there won't be any polio cases," Health Minster, Ghulam Nabi Azad, said.
The efforts in Nigeria and Afghanistan, two of the three countries in which polio is still a major problem, have also been increasing. The world efforts are making steady progress.
