Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh rules out serving a third term as Indian Prime Minister.

Singh, who is 81 years old, has been the prime minister of India since 2004. He represents India’s governing Congress Party.

According to The New York Times, Singh said, “In a few months’ time, after the general election, I will hand the baton over to a new prime minister. I hope it will be a U.P.A.-chosen prime minister, and our party will work to that end in the campaign for the general elections.”

In terms of who will take his position, Singh expressed his support for Rahul Gandhi, the vice-president of the Congress Party. Mr. Singh cited Gandhi’s outstanding credentials as a main reason for his support.

Singh’s coalition government has faced some difficult charges in recent years. Corruption scandals have challenged his administration. The corruption charges include fraud in the sports, real estate, and coal sectors. According to CNN, Singh sought to downplay allegations, and spoke to his administration’s objective of combatting corrupt practices. He says he took every measure to make his administration transparent and accountable.
