Another retailer may have suffered a security data breach.
According to The New York Times, Michaels Stores said Saturday that it was investigating a possible company security breach involving customers’ credit card information.
The Associated Press has reported that the company launched the probe after learning of possible fraudulent activity on some U.S. payment cards used at the arts and crafts retailer.
“Although the investigation is ongoing, based on the information the company has received and in light of the widely reported criminal efforts to penetrate the data systems of U.S. retailers, Michaels believes it is appropriate to let its customers know a potential issue may have occurred,” Michaels Stores Inc. said in a statement.
The company’s CEO Chuck Rubin asks that customers take steps to protect themselves and review their account statements for any unauthorized charges.
If the investigation proves Michaels has indeed suffered a breach, it will become the third retailer to fall victim since Target and Neiman Marcus announced breaches that affected millions.
