Former Olympian Michelle Kwan’s husband Clay Pell is going to run for governor of the State of Rhode Island.
WJAR NBC first reported in October that Pell, the grandson of the late U.S. Sen. Claiborne Pell, was considering making a run for office.
He will officially announce his candidacy on Tuesday.
Pell, a Democrat, served in the U.S. Coast Guard and as the director for strategic planning on the White House National Security staff. In addition, he worked as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for International and Foreign Language Education at the U.S. Education Department, the Associated Press notes.
"The problems we face are urgent and they need urgent action," Pell told the AP during a recent interview. "They need a fresh approach, and I believe I bring a distinct set of experience, values and skills to move this state forward."
Other Democrats Pell will face in the race include Providence Mayor Angel Taveras and General Treasurer Gina Raimondo.
The 32-year-old married the retired figure skater and two-time medalist in 2013.
