Michigan governor Rick Snyder has launched an initiative to encourage immigration in Detroit while boosting the economy.
Snyder gave his State of the Union speech on Thursday, according to MLive. In his speech, Snyder made immigration a key issue and insisted that Michigan's economy would improve, pointing to the first three years in his term as improvement.
Snyder also stated that he wants to make Michigan more attractive for foreign investment on top of making the state immigrant-friendly, according to SFGate. Snyder has vowed to keep immigration legal in Michigan while encouraging it to grow and making it "the most welcoming place."
Snyder has backed national immigration reform and said that immigration is "how we made our country great." Snyder also promoted immigrant entrepreneurs as a resource for economic growth in Detroit.
The Michigan governor will sign an executive order called the "Michigan Office for New Americans" to launch his plan into action, as he announced in his speech.
