MTV is going straight-to-series with Finding Carter, a new coming of age drama from Bones writer Emily Silver and veteran executive producer Terri Minsky.

The project stars Kathryn Prescott as Carter, a teen living with her single mom, Lori (Milena Govich), notes Entertainment Weekly. The plot gets moving when police discover that Lori had abducted Carter as a toddler. Carter now has to get used to her new family, which includes a twin sister.

If that sounds like a story ripe for ABC Family, it’s because that’s where the project started. According to Deadline, Silver first wrote the pilot in 2012 and sent it to ABC Family and MTV. It piqued the interest of Mina Lefevre when she was at ABC Family. She took the project with her to MTV, where she’s now scripted development chief.

Finding Carter’s script got a rewrite before MTV ordered the pilot, then quickly decided to put in a 12-episode order. Other members of the show’s cast include Cynthia Watros, Alexis Denisof and Anna Jacoby-Heron. Step Up Revolution’s Scott Speer directed the pilot.

MTV is currently home to the scripted shows Awkward and Teen Wolf.
