Neil Young was celebrated Tuesday night by the producers and engineers wing of the Recording Academy.

USA Today reported that Young received his award yesterday during an event that took place at The Village, which is a historic Los Angeles recording studio that was home to the work of The Beach Boys, Johnny Cash and Elton John.

The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences honored Young for his career that has spanned more than four decades. The group wanted to honor his artist creativity, musicianship and philanthropic efforts.

Young address the crowd on Tuesday saying that "You're honoring me, you're honoring yourself, it's not me, it's you."

Rolling Stone covered the event and recorded the entire speech from Young.

Young went on to say, " So this is a cool night because we're all here together. I know almost everybody here. If I don't know you, I thought I did when I saw you. It really is great. A lot of us, you know, producers and engineers –I'm kind of a producer, partially, an engineer, I'm not really good at either one. It's hurt my records in the past. We're performance-oriented: technical things don't matter that much."

Dave Matthews made a surprise appearance at the event to pay tribute and honor Young. Young and Matthews have worked together on a variety of songs and have covered "Down By The River."
