Fox confirmed on Monday that Prince will appear during the special New Girl episode that will air after the Super Bowl. The show’s creative team explained how the “Purple Rain” singer wound up on the show.

Last month, it was reported that Prince would make a cameo on the show and E! News revealed that the rock legend is actually a fan of the sitcom. Executive producer Brett Baer told E! News that Prince actually connected them during the show’s previous season.

“He knows everything about the show,” Baer said. “He contacted Zooey [Deschanel] and Hannah [Simone] directly and asked to do the show. We couldn't work it out last year. But when the Super Bowl thing was floated, it was perfect timing.”

Prince decided that he wanted more than just a cameo though. As Fox’s official synopsis confirms, the main cast goes to a party Prince is throwing at his mansion, although only Jess (Deschanel) and Cece (Simone) were invited. The guys (Jake Johnson, Damon Wayans Jr., Max Greenfield and Lamorne Morris) all try to crash the party.

“He's right in the middle of trying to help [Nick and Jess] work through some stuff and it's amazing,” Baer told E!. “His thing was all about getting to Jess and trying to bring out this inner part of her that hadn't been brought to the forefront.” Prince came up with the idea of giving Jess ‘hip tips.’

Executive producer Dave Finkel added that Prince is “genuinely funny” and has a “very quiet, wry sense of humor but he kills.”

The Super Bowl is set for Feb. 2 on Fox and episodes of New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine will air after the game.
