The singer for the national anthem at Super Bowl XLVIII has been chosen as soprano Renee Fleming, is a four-time Grammy winner. She will be the first opera singer to do the honors.
On Tuesday, the NFL announced Fleming will be making her Super Bowl debut on Sunday, Feb. 2 at East Rutherford, N.J.’s MetLife Stadium.
Fleming does have experience with major sporting events. She sang the national anthem ahead of Game 3 of the World Series back in 2003 at Yankee Stadium. Other major events she’s performed at include the Olympics in Beijing, the Diamond Jubilee Concert for Queen Elizabeth II and the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony.
She’s best known in the New York City circuit, frequently performing at the famed Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. CBS reports President Obama awarded her with the highest honor for an artist, the National Medal of Arts.
As we previously reported, performers for the Super Bowl halftime show include Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
