The Academy Awards will celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the MGM Classic, The Wizard of Oz.
The Wizard of Oz starred Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, and Jack Haley. It was a feat in Technicolor and featured songs that are still popular today. The Wizard of Oz brought to life some of the most popular images in movie history including the yellow brick road, Flying Monkeys, and the Lollipop Guild. According to Variety, it was estimated that 200,000 sound effects wer used in the movie musical, including the cyclone effect.
In 1939, the movie was nominated for Best Picture, Best Cinematography, Color, Best Art Direction, and Best Effects, Special Effects. The movie also won the Academy Award for original score and song. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Oscar producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron said in a statement, "We are delighted to celebrate the birthday of one of the most beloved movies of all time at this year’s Oscars.”
The 86th annual Academy Awards will be presented on Sunday, March 2 at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center. Ellen DeGeneres will host this year’s celebration.
