After a man was pulled over in Mexico City last week, his pet parrot told police that the driver was drunk.
According to the Spanish-language newspaper El Universal, Guillermo Reyes was stopped at an alcohol checkpoint and got out of his car for routine testing when police heard a voice from the car say, “He’s drunk, he’s drunk.”
Cops were obviously shocked that the man’s pet parrot was actually telling them that Reyes was drunk, but even more surprised to learn that the parrot was right.
Reyes failed a sobriety and was subsequently arrested.
Animal Surveillance Brigade officers showed up to haul away the snitching bird, but allowed the parrot to accompany his owner to prison after it was feared the bird would die if separated from Reyes, reports El Universal.
The two spent the night in El Torito, the city's "hangover prison," where anyone caught driving over the legal 0.08 alcohol limit is taken to sober up, the New York Daily News reports.
After the ordeal, the 49-year-old Reyes probably curses the day he ever taught his parrot to talk.
