Pharrell Williams debuts on the Social 50 chart at No. 43. Williams has been receiving a lot of buzz because of his Oscar nomination and the surging popularity of his single "Happy," from the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack.
The pop industry was represented in the Oscar category, along with Williams, U2 was nominated for best original song for "Ordinary Love," reported The Hollywood Reporter.
The social 50 keeps track of the most popular artists on YouTube, Vevo, Facebook, Twitter, SoundCloud, Wikipedia, Myspace and Instagram.
Williams was talked about across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram a lot since his Oscar nomination, which resulted in more than 237,000 new fans. This is a a 65% increase over the previous week on social media for Williams. More than 10 million conversations on Facebook included talks about the Oscar nomination and "Happy."
Billboard reported that the single has already reached 120,000 downloads. The song is also moving up the Billboard top 40 charts.
The single from the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack will be featured on Williams upcoming album.
Despicable Me 2 stars Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Miranda Cosgrove, Benjamin Bratt and Russell Brand. The film has already grossed over $368,053,060 in the United States alone.
