Monster Beverage Corp. is being investigated as to whether the company violated any law and marketed Monster energy drinks to minors.
According to the Associated Press, a San Francisco city attorney and the New York state attorney general have launched an investigation into Monster’s marketing tactics and if the caffeinated drinks are marketed to children.
On the San Francisco City Attorney website, Dennis Herrera’s lawsuit claims that the Monster Beverage Corp. did violate California law while marketing the drinks to children as young as six-years-old.
"Monster Energy is unique among energy drink makers for the extent to which it targets children and youth in its marketing, despite the known risks its products pose to young people's health and safety.”
Herrera’s investigation into Monster Corp. began back in 2012 and the lawsuit was filed in May 2013.
For his part in the investigation, New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman issued subpoenas to Monster.
A company spokesperson has denied that Monster targets children with its marketing or that the brands are anymore caffeinated than coffee.
