A rapper has never won song or record of the year, but it is predicted that that may change tonight at the Grammys.
Ben Haggerty, who most people know as Macklemore is certainly in the running for song and record of the year with hits like “Thrift Shop” and “Same Love,” according to The Associated Press. Macklemore believes that Kendrick Lamar, a fellow rapper, should win, but he also thinks that if he and his partner, Ryan Lewis, take a Grammy home it will be well-deserved.
"If we win that Grammy, then we deserve it as well. I think that we made a great album that pushed the genre of hip-hop," Macklemore said. "I think that hip-hop can be at times resistant to change and when you see two white dudes from Seattle, Washington, rapping about gay marriage, it's like, 'Hold up, this isn't hip-hop,' when in actuality it is. Hip-hop has always been about expansion, about pushing the genre, about challenging the listener."
Both the Macklemore-Lewis duo and Lamar are both nominated for best new artist and the duo is also up for best song of the year for their hit “Same Love.” Though many rappers have led in nominations for awards, this may be the first year that a rapper wins.
There may be a few other things that will be new to Grammys this year. Lorde is up for two Grammys, both record and song of the year. If she wins she will be the youngest to win both, according to ABC.
This year’s Grammys may break records and will certainly not disappoint with performances from Robin Thicke, Pink, Madonna, Beyonce, Jay Z and more.
