Rick Ross has launched a lawsuit against LMFAO for one of their “Party Rock Anthem” song’s lyrics, which echo his 2006 song “Hustlin'." Ross and Jermaine Jackson have sued Stefan Kendal Gordy (Redfoo) and Skyler Austen Gordy (SkyBlu) as well as. Kobalt Music Publishing and Kia Motors America for copyright infringement.
Ross isn’t happy with LMFAO using the lyric "Everyday I'm shufflin' " in “Party Rock Anthem,” because he alleges they took it from his “Hustlin’” single, off of his debut album Port of Miami, which boasts the lyric "Everyday I'm hustlin.' "
"The use of 'Hustlin' ' in 'Party Rock Anthem' is readily apparent, despite the slight change from 'Everyday I’m hustlin' …' to 'Everyday I'm shufflin' …' and constitutes, inter alia, the creation of an unauthorized derivative work,” the lawsuit reads, The Hollywood Reporter notes.
The lawsuit also accuses LMFAO of deliberately saying the lyric as Ross would and called it “an obvious attempt to capitalize on the fame and success of Hustlin'.”
NME reports Ross also said in the lawsuit that the Los Angeles-based duo capitalized on the phrase by starting a clothing line with the expression on it, which he says would not be possible without his influence.
