Rodrigo y Gabriela burst onto the music scene in 2006, after the Mexican born guitar duo moved to Dublin, Ireland where they developed a cult following. With the release of their self-titled debut, which included interpretations of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway To Heaven” and Metallica’s “Orion”, they soon came to America and were embraced by mainstream acts, and the hard rock and metal community, which the band note as a huge influence on their playing. With their first new material in 5 years, Rodrigo y Gabriela are set to release 9 Dead Alive, an homage to people who have inspired them.
According to Pop Matters the Flamenco/rock guitar virtuosos recorded their highly anticipated follow-up to their critically acclaimed 11:11 at their studio in Ixtapa, Mexico. 9 Dead Alive was recorded as a conceptual album, which the duo stated about the songs “is a personal celebration of individuals who have passed on, but through their deeds and words still resonate in the 21st century.” The track list shows the influence and inspiration behind each song.
Consequence of Sound noted the press release for the album sees the pair playing much of the tracks live, capturing the spontaneity of the acoustic maestros.
A video released as well shows a behind-the-scenes snippet the duo speaking about the album, new music and their live approach to recording. 9 Dead Alive is set for release on April 24 on Rubyworks Records.
