There was another school shooting Tuesday morning, this time in Roswell, New Mexico at the Berrendo Middle School. At least two children have been hospitalized and police say the suspect is in custody.
The shooting occurred at around 8 a.m. local time, reports NBC News. Two children were airlifted to the University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas, a 14-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl. The two are in critical condition.
Seventh grade student Gabriel Tortillo told the Albuquerque Journal that he saw the a boy with a gun. The boy shot another boy in the face, near his eye. Another student told the paper that the boy was targeted twice and the girl was shot in the arm.
Odiee Carranza, an eighth grade student, told the paper that the student ran to the gym, where he pulled the gun from an instrument case. “Then he shot up in the sky, then dropped the gun, and then some teacher grabbed the kid that had the gun,” she told the Journal.
The Associated Press reports that police responded at 8:11 a.m. After the school was placed on lockdown, the suspect was arrested. They did not release any further information about the suspect. Eric Finley, a spokesman for the Lubbock hospital, told the AP that the injured boy is believed to be the suspect’s target.
Children were taken from the school to a mall, where parents picked them up. New Mexico state Police are now leading the investigation and authorities are going to have a news conference later today. Governor Susana Martinez has arrived in Roswell and will take part in the news conference.
