Syrian Electronic Army hacks Skype’s Facebook page, Twitter account

Hackers calling themselves the Syrian Electronic Army or SEA took over Skype’s social media accounts on Wednesday.

According to ABC News, the group hacked Skype’s Facebook page and Twitter account protesting Skype's cooperation with the National Security Agency. The company’s blog was also accessed.

The SEA had been using the social media presence to post anti-Microsoft messages, the Register reports.

"Don't use Microsoft emails (hotmail, outlook). They are monitoring your accounts and selling the data to the governments," the group tweeted on New Year's Day, before posting the contact details of the company's CEO Steve Bullmer.

Skype tweeted back a response stating that it was aware the social media properties were targeted, but assured users that no information was compromised.

The SEA also took over the phone sharing site Snapchat and posted the IDs and partial phone numbers of more than four and a half million of its users. Snapchat has since admitted it had a security flaw.
