In an effort to captivate audiences, there are a number of thriller and horror films about hostages and abductions hitting theaters this week. Legendary adventures are also making their way to the big screen, including the story of a popular mythical Greek hero.
After betraying his step-father and being denied the love of his life, a half-man, half-god is exiled into slavery in The Legend of Hercules. This man with extraordinary strength must battle his way back to his lost love and the land from which he was banished in order to gain control and unify the kingdom. The PG-13 adventure stars Kellan Lutz. It’s playing in 2D and 3D theaters for two hours and forty minutes.
A 17-year-old boy searches for his missing parents and kidnapped brother in The Adventurer: The Curse of the Midas Box. He traces clues to a hotel where he finds child abducting monsters and an ancient relic that brings an abundance of riches to those that possess it. The family adventure film runs for one hour and thirty-eight minutes. The PG film is available in limited theaters.
Government drug experiments go horribly wrong in The Banshee Chapter. In the limited released film, a journalist investigates the disappearance of a friend who had taken neurological drugs that were supplied by the CIA. With her friend missing and no documentation that anything took place, the reporter’s limited clues are a videotape that he had made and a strange radio signal coming from a secret government run building. The horror film is based on real documentation and testimony from CIA test subjects. The one hour and twenty-seven minute film is rated R for violence, drugs, language and nudity.
A man and woman, who recently split from their significant others, fall for each other at an inopportune time in their lives in Black Coffee. As their love grows, their exes walk back into their lives and try to get them back. The PG, romantic comedy is playing in limited theaters for one hour and twenty-five minutes.
A motel owner and her daughter are held hostage by a man with limited eyesight in Cold Comes the Night. The two are nabbed to be the lookout as the criminal goes on a dangerous journey to reclaim a sack filled with money from a corrupt police officer. Bryan Cranston and Alice Eve star in the limited released crime thriller. The one hour and thirty-one minute film is rated R for violence and language.
A young woman, who lost her mother during childbirth, becomes strangely connected to her new neighbor in The Truth About Emanuel. While babysitting her child, she develops a strong bond to the woman next door, who happens to look a lot like her deceased mother. The unrated drama stars Jessica Biel, Kaya Scodelario, Alfred Molina and Frances O'Connor. The one hour and thirty-six minute film is available in limited theaters.
A woman wakes up and finds herself in an underground fight club in Raze. She must battle and kill if she wants to keep her family and herself alive. The unrated horror film runs for one hour and twenty-seven minutes. It’s available in limited theaters.
A former NCAA basketball player’s dreams are crushed when he suffers a career ending injury in Dumbbells. No longer with the chance of NBA fame and fortune, he takes on a job at a local gym as a personal trainer. When the gym goes under new management, the owner decides to make it the setting of a new reality show. The unrated comedy stars Jay Mohr, Carl Reiner, Tom Arnold, Jaleel White, Andy Milonakis, Fabio, Hoyt Richards and Brian Drolet. It’s playing in limited theaters for one hour and forty minutes.
A young woman, fed up with her life in New York City, heads to Austin to start anew in Loves Her Gun. While in Texas, she gets involved in the underground culture and finds herself struggling between reality and paranoia. The unrated drama is running in limited theaters for one hour and thirty-nine minutes.

Under the guidance of designers Emily Pilloton and Matthew Miller, the teens help rebuild the community both physically and spiritually by constructing a Farmer’s Market. The inspirational documentary plays for one hour and twenty-five minutes. The unrated film is available in limited theaters.
The troubles with divorce are investigated in Divorce Corp. The one hour and thirty-three minute documentary delves into the monetary implications of a dissolving marriage. Many courts keep divorce proceedings going on for years which have been known to cause bankruptcy, foreclosures, violence and even suicide. The unrated, limited released film is narrated by Dr. Drew Pinsky.
Neurological testing and underground Coliseum fights are the basis of this week’s horror films. Next week, the devil comes out to play in Devil’s Due. Among the other films hitting theaters on January 17 are Ride Along, The Nut Job and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit.
