There’s a thrilling way to start off the New Year…get a scare with one of this week’s new releases. Another installment of a popular scary movie franchise makes its way into theaters.
Black magic is the focus of Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones. When a woman dies in the apartment beneath a party, party-goers grab a camera and search for clues about her death. They discover signs of witchcraft and a photo of one of their friends. Soon, the one in the photo finds markings on his body and is tormented by evil spirits trying to make him their host. The horror film runs for one hour and twenty-four minutes. It’s rated R for language, violence, nudity and drugs.
A gang detective looks to put a stop to the corruption of the underworld by pitting the biggest crime families against each other in Beyond Outrage. His secret weapon is the former head of a crime family who is being released from prison but believed to be dead. The one hour and fifty-two minute Japanese crime drama has English subtitles and is available in limited theaters. It’s rated R for violence, language and sex.
A man finds himself in a hole filled with dead bodies and no recollection of how he got there in Open Grave. After he gets out, he stumbles upon a house filled with other scared people who have no idea what has happened to them. The man starts to contemplate whether one of the strangers is the culprit or if he himself is the killer. The thriller is running in limited theaters for one hour and forty-two minutes. It’s rated R for violence and language.
Just like in this week’s Open Grave, the main character in next week’s Raze wakes up and finds herself in a deadly situation. A mythical Greek hero is also battling to survive in theaters on Jan. 10 in The Legend of Hercules.
