Two Mexican citizens, who were arrested at the border, used account information stolen during the Target security breach to make purchases, South Texas police said Monday.
According to the Associated Press, Mary Carmen Garcia, 27, and Daniel Guardiola Dominguez, 28, of Monterrey, Mexico, used cards containing the account information of South Texas residents to purchase merchandise at Best Buy, Wal-Mart and Toys R Us stores.
CBS affiliate KGBT has reported that authorities found 96 cloned or counterfeit credit cards under their clothing.
The AP notes that McAllen police do not know if these arrest are the first related to the Target breach that occurred late last month.
Target spokeswoman Molly Snyder said Monday that the investigation was active and ongoing.
"I'd have to refer you to local law enforcement there for any questions about their community," she said.
On Sunday morning, the pair was arrested at the Anzalduas International Bridge trying to re-enter the U.S.
Garcia and Dominguez are currently being held on state charges, but will face federal charges.
