U2 received the Sonny Bono Visionary Award at the star-studded Palm Springs International Film Festival on Saturday.
The Sonny Bono Visionary Award is named after the politician who founded the festival. The Festival, celebrating its 25th year, occurs from Jan 3 - 13.
Bono and The Edge were in great spirits while walking the red carpet prior to receiving the award. They said they were touched to be honored, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
“We normally present the Sonny Bono Visionary Award to a director, but for our 25th anniversary we wanted to take the occasion to celebrate U2, a visionary group and the world’s premier rock band, for their unparalleled humanitarian work against extreme poverty, disease, and social injustice,” said festival chairman Harold Matzner, according to Variety.
This might not be the last award for the year for these rock stars known for promoting social justice. Their song “Ordinary Love” heard in the film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, has been nominated for original song by the Golden Globe and the Critics’ Choice Awards.
