Officials in Greenville, Kentucky say that up to nine people have been killed in a fire, all from the same family. Two people remain hospitalized.
The fire in Muhlenberg County left eight children dead, reports WTVF. It started around 2 a.m. with 11 people in the home. An adult and a child did manage to escape and they are currently being treated for serious injuries at a hospital in Nashville.
Officials described the heat as so intense that they could not enter the home when they arrived. It is completely lost, with the roof caved in and an entire section missing. Even the ground was burned by the flames.
According to CNN, the children ranged from ages four to 15 and they all lived in the home. The survivors are Chad J. Watson, 36, and a child, 11-years-old.
The cause is still unknown and is being investigated.
The Associated Press notes that Greenville is located in rural western Kentucky, 130 miles southwest of Louisville. It’s the third fire in the state in over a year to kill five or more people.
