No matter what age, having something in your hands and moments later it is taken away is not a pleasant feeling. This is especially true when it all happens in a cafeteria full of food.

According to The Salt Lake Tribune, approximately 40 students at Uintah Elementary had their lunches taken and trashed because they owed money on their balances, on Tues. Thankfully they were not without food entirely, the kids were given milk and fruit in substitution to their meals, writes The Salt Lake Tribune.

Balances affect and limit the choices that kids have at school. Library books are commonly a big source that contributes to a negative balance. Usually,that comes with constant reminders from the school to the child and parent about the money owed.

The following day, the district made a Facebook post apologizing for the event, committing to clearing up any misunderstandings on their behave and working to ensure no reoccurrence of the incident, reports The Huffington Post .

School systems are an environment where kids should feel safe and be protected from cruel treatment. Although the message behind the act was within reason, the method used was not in everyone’s best interest.
