A 29-year-old Texas mother has died after she contracted the flu virus.

According to ABC News, mother of three, Alice Jones, got sick with the flu on Thursday and by Monday she was dead.

The aspiring nurse’s husband, Darrell Jones, who served in the military, said the family is completely heartbroken by what happened.

"I made it through Afghanistan and thought we would move on with our lives," said Jones, who turned 27 the day his wife passed away. "I was thinking that was the most dangerous part of our marriage."

KXAS News in Dallas-Fort Worth reported Wednesday that another Texas victim, 13-year-old Lydia Kizziar, also died after she got the flu.

The virus has become even more deadly this year than the past few years, due to the H1N1 strain.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that between 3,000 and 49,000 people in U.S. die each year of influenza. Last week at least 20 states had high numbers of people hospitalized for the flu, the CDC says.

Hopefully the tragic deaths of Jones and Kizziar will offer reminders for everyone to get their flu shots this year.
