A Chinese movie based on a reality TV movie is bringing in big numbers at box offices in China.

According to the Associated Press, Dad, Where Are We Going? raked as one of the best movies opening in China last Friday, the day it was released. Friday was the first day of the Chinese New Year.

Chinese New Year is an important time. It is connected to the lunar New Year and happens between January and February. In China, it is an important benchmark. Each year, Chinese audiences flock to the movies, as experts report on which movies were the most successful among fans.

Dad, Where Are We Going? was a hit show on China's television last year. The reality show followed five celebrities who were accustomed to spending time away from their children. According to Variety, the movie, Dad, Where are We Going? scored RMB171 million ($28 million) to Saturday according to local data, and $34 million through Sunday, according to Rentrak estimates.

Other popular films opening in China for the celebratory time around Chinese New Year included The Monkey King and Three Kingdoms.
