A group of construction workers accidently stumbled upon a 15,000-year-old mammoth tusk during their work in Seattle’s South Lake Union.
According to Yahoo, the workers found the ancient bone, which was 110ft below the surface, on Tuesday.
The workers immediately contacted the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture, who then came to the sight and confirmed that it was in fact a mammoth tusk. The museum stated that the piece likely dates back to the ice age.
The museum hopes to further research the fossil, but the decision to do so will be up to the owner of the land it was found on because it is private property, Fox News reports. At this time, the fossil is still under the property of the landowner.
If possible, the museum would like to excavate the area more to see if anything else can be uncovered.
Mammoths are a relative of the elephant and were very common in the Washington State area about 10,000 year ago.
