Diao Yinan's Black Coal, Thin Ice won the Golden Bear for best film at the 2014 Berlin International Film Festival.

Black Coal, Thin Ice is a Chinese detective thriller, reports Chron , and took home the coveted top prize at the film festival.

During his acceptance speech, director Diao Yinan said, "It's really hard to believe that this dream has come true — a dream that I've had for such a long time and that didn't come true for such a long time...It's wonderful."

This is Yinan's third time directing a film, with his last being Night Train in 2007. The male lead of Black Coal, Thin Ice , Liao Fan, won the Silver Bear for best actor at the Berlin Film Festival for his portrayal of an alcoholic detective investigating the mysterious murders in industrial northern China.

Other winners at the 2014 Berlin Film Festival were Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel and Richard Linklater's Boyhood .

The Wrap reports that Black Coal, Thin Ice is the first Chinese film to take the Golden Bear since Wang Quan'an's 2007 film Tuya's Wedding .
