A little boy with severe brain damage died Thursday after being the cause of much questioning over Florida’s FCAT policies.

Ethan Rediske, 11, was born with cerebral palsy. He also had severe brain damage. His family had known for a while that he was going to pass away and set out to make the rest of his life as wonderful as possible.

Last year, Rediske was the face of controversy involving the state’s standardized testing regulations, reports the Huffington Post. The school district told the family that, in order for Rediske to be exempt from the test, they would need to provide proof that he was dying.

While the family could have just ignored the school, they decided not to, as it would negatively affect their son’s teacher.

In order to fight this issue, a bill has been designed to revise laws involving standardized testing, now named the “Ethan Act” after Thursday’s news.

According to News 13, the family gave Rediske morphine so that he would not be in pain during his final moments.
