It certainly isn’t a good time for singer, Carly Rae Jepson, and Owl City’s Adam Young right now. In 2012, the duo was sued for their hit song, “It’s always a good time” by singer-songwriter, Ally Burnett for alleged copyright infringement. Burnett claims the song was lifted off of her track, “ Ah, It’s A Love Story,” according to the NY Daily News . Should the lawsuit favor Burnett, Jepson and Owl City would lose all royalties for the song.
BMI, a non-profit organization established to represent musicians in music rights management has been brought in to reach an agreement between Jepson, Owl City, and Burnett. As a result, $804,156 worth of royalties has been placed in escrow until the case is resolved by the musicians according to the TMZ . With the amount of the escrow, Burnett has agreed to drop the lawsuit, but until the conflict is completely resolved the money will not be given to anybody.
While the case continues to be hashed out, Jepson is preparing for her Broadway debut as the maid turned princess in the musical “Cinderella” on Feb. 4.
