Authorities said that a convicted child rapist, at a Denver halfway house, cut off his ankle monitor on Friday evening and has been on the run ever since.
Colorado Corrections Department spokesman Roger Hudson told CNN on Sunday that a fugitive warrant was requested after Eric Hartwell fled the group home “Independence House,” where he was serving his parole.
According to the Colorado Sex Offender Registry, Hartwell was convicted of raping a 6-year-old in 1991 and attempting to sexually assault a teenager in 1996.
This is not the first time the 51-year-old cut off his ankle bracelet and tried to elude authorities.
After failing to register as a sex offender, he was sent to a halfway house in Washington State in 2009, where he cut off his leg monitor and fled to Texas.
In 2010, Hartwell was sentenced to five years in prison. He served part of that sentence and was ordered to serve a lifetime of supervised parole.
The escapee is wanted by both the Colorado Corrections Department and federal officials.
ABC 7 News has reported that investigators are offering a reward for information leading to his capture.
