Convicted child rapist Eric Eugene Hartwell flees a Denver halfway home where he was serving parole, after he cut off his ankle monitor.
CNN reports that Hartwell, 51, was convicted of raping a six-year-old girl in 1991. Roger Hudson, the spokesperson for the Colorado Corrections Department, said that Hartwell left "Independence House" on Friday evening.
This is not the first time that Hartwell has failed to comply with the rules. In 2010 a federal judge in Texas sentenced Hartwell to five years to prison and a lifetime of parole for not registering as a sex offender. Prior to the sentencing in 2010 Hartwell continuance of noncompliance occurred in 2009 when he was placed at a halfway house in Washington.
Hartwell was placed there for his defiance to register as a sex offender. After being in the halfway house for a week Hartwell cut off his ankle monitor and fled to Texas.
ABC News added that five years after he served time for raping a six-year-old child he was sentenced more time behind bars. Hartwell was sentenced to prison again for his attempt in raping a pregnant 17-year-old hitchhiker.
In regards to Hartwell’s escape Hudson said, “This is an active investigation of an absconder that we are hoping not to send even farther underground."
He went on to say that authorities are working “as quickly as possible” to locate Hartwell. Federal investigators are offering a reward in order to capture Hartwell.
