The Chinese film Bai Ri Yan Huo (Black Coal, Thin Ice) took top honors at the Berlin International Film Festival this past weekend.
The Golden Bear went to the team that created Black Coal, Thin Ice. It is the fourth film from China to take home the top honors. Liao Fan won the Silver Bear for Best Actor. He is the first Chinese actor to win in this category. The film is about a detective linked to a number of murders. The movie was directed by Yi’nan Diao.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Zhou Tiedong, president of China Film Promotion International, wrote on his Sina Weibo microblog, “I have said much earlier that for international filmmakers, 2013 is the year of China, and the following ten years will be also the China Decade."
The Berlin International Film Festival began ran from Feb. 6-16. Some 400 films were screened during the festival, according to Reuters. Other winners from the festival included Richard Linklater for Boyhood. Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel was the Grand Jury Prize Winner.
