Thirty-five children were injured after a second floor of the Family Life Center at Freedom Baptist Church caved in Wednesday Night in Laurel, Mississippi.
Nineteen children were taken in for treatment and were later released. The last patient had to be airlifted to Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg to be treated for a nonlife threatening orthopedic injury. She is reported stable and awake, according to NBC News.
None of the injuries were considered life threatening.
According to CNN, Wanda Benson, a spokeswoman for the Jones County Sheriff's Office said that 14 others were hurt but did not require medical attention.
Seventy-nine children were in attendance for an evening worship when the floor caved in around 8:20 p.m. Luckily, nothing was going on downstairs, which resulted in no serious injuries.
Pastor Tommy Davis told the Chronicle that, "In the middle of the student service, the floor — which is a second-story floor — gave way, causing about 70 students to fall. But it's got to be said that no one was seriously injured, no one was trapped. God's hand was certainly taking care of the kids who were in that building,” according to the AP.
Authorities are investigating the collapse but do not suspect weather conditions to be the cause, as it was a fair day.
