Coca-Cola is one of the largest beverage producers in the world and they have started to take notice about the declining consumption of soda in the United States. The average amount of gallons of soda drank by the average American is down over three and a half gallons since 2008. In 2013, the average American drank around 38.6 gallons of soda a year, which is considerably lower than 54 gallons, which was the average in 1998 when soda consumption hit its peak according to The Huffington Post.

Coca-Cola made the announcement on Tuesday about their declining profit last quarter due to a decrease in soda sales volume. One of the main reasons for this decline could be that Americans have become much more knowledgeable about how bad soda is for you. There are so many different campaigns from the media and government that show how soda can be linked to obesity and diabetes.

It was different ten years ago, when people turned to diet soda thinking that was a healthier choice. ABC News is also reporting another reason for the decline of soda sales could be the wide variety of options in stores today including sparkling water, flavored water and energy drinks. Artificial sweeteners are also being listed as a factor for why people would be turning down soda more frequently.

The soda industry is trying to think of their own way to keep people buying their beverages. They are beginning to develop low-calorie sodas that taste just like the original sodas and will keep Americans happy, as well as allow them to control how much sweetener is in their soda. There will always be people that will drink soda, but overall it seems that more people are turning to alternatives, including water which will continue to trouble the soda industry in the upcoming years.
