It seems that pop culture courses have been coming to colleges more often than not. Very focused, entertaining classes studying “Breaking Bad” and “Beyonce” have become quite the trend.
Some students at Central Michigan University will be studying Chemistry and English while other students will be engaging in a learning environment all about zombies and the post apocalyptic world.
Professor Kelly Murphy is thrilled to be involved in a zombie learning environment, seeing as she is a huge fan of “The Walking Dead.’
The course is called “From Revelation to ‘The Walking Dead,’” and the students read popular zombie books, look over biblical texts and view clips from popular movies like “28 Days Later” and “Shaun of the Dead, according to minbcnews.com
Discussions of hypothetical issues that individuals would come across in a post-apocalyptic world, play a large part in the classroom as well.
"Studying ancient biblical texts isn't most people's cup of tea," said senior, Kevin White. "But, when you add zombies, it instantly becomes everyone's cup of tea," according to wokv.com
It’s important to integrate pop culture in the classroom, so that students feel connected to learning material—and what better way than to incorporate one of the top television shows? Unless students have the luxury of paying for college with his or her own money, parents on the other hand, may feel that their money is being wasted on classes that don’t apply to specific majors.
