David Lee Travis, one of the ageing British television starts to face charges of assaulting women, has been cleared of 12 charges of indecent assault.

Travis was arrested in November 2012 during the ongoing investigation of the late BBC children’s show star Jimmy Saville, who was a child sex offender. According to Reuters, the former DJ was the first star to go to trial and faced 14 charges that involved 11 women from 1976 to 2008.

Although he was cleared of 12 charges, the BBC reports that the Southwark Crown Court jury could not reach a verdict for another indecent assault charge and a charge of sexual assault.

“I am not over the moon about any of this today. I do not feel like there is a victory in any way, shape or form,” Travis said outside the court. “On the contrary, I think you already know that I have been through a year and a half of hell on this.”

Travis was a popular BBC Radio 1 DJ in the 1970s and 1980s and hosted a weekly show. His real name is David Patrick Griffin.

While he was the first to go to trial, he is not the first celebrity to be cleared of indecent assault charges. Soap opera star William Roache was cleared of six charges.
