Commercial director Robert Rugan pitched a revival of the cartoon chipmunk show Chip 'n' Dale as a live-action film and Disney has shown interest.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, who first reported the news, the film would be an updated version of the show and would be a mix of live-action and CG, probably in the style of The Smurfs.
David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman's Mandeville Films/TV will be producing the adaptation. Alexander Young will executive produce the film.
Variety reports that sources have confirmed that Rugan will write the script and it will be an origin story of the whole Rescue Rangers cast, including Gadget Hackwrench, Zipper and Monterey Jack.
Rugan is currently attached to direct Paramount Pictures' Genies and an adaptation of The Genius Files with Warner Bros.
THR notes that Chip 'n' Dale were first introduced in a 1943 short with Pluto. They then appeared in other shorts where they harassed either Donald Duck or Pluto, until they got their own show in the late 1980s.
