Pamela Rauseo of West Kendall, Florida was in a panic Thursday afternoon. As she was driving on the busy Dolphin Expressway, she saw that her five-month-old nephew was turning blue and wasn’t breathing. She suddenly stopped her car, holding the baby and yelled for help from anyone. Thankfully, there were Good Samaritans around and drivers stopped to help.

“I heard screaming,” Miami Herald photographer Al Diaz told The Herald. He was just behind Rauseo’s car. The woman was “screaming that the baby can’t breathe.”

Diaz jumped out of his own car, running between lanes to see if anyone could help. He did find Sweetwater police officer Amauris Bastidas and performed CPR. Lucila Godoy, whose 3-year-old child was in her car, was also at the scene to help before Bastidas arrived.

Bastidas said that, after lifting the boy up and down, “He started breathing and crying.”

Meanwhile, help continued to arrive. Capt. Anthony Trim and Lt. Alvaro Tonanez of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue were there to help. Tonanez “did a quick check and made sure the baby’s airway was open,” Trim told the Herald.

Fire Rescue arrived and the baby, Sebastian de la Cruz, was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Rauseo spoke with The New York Daily News today and recalled how scared she was of losing her sister’s baby. “When I got out of my car and I was screaming for help, that's what was going through my head — we're losing him,” she said. “I remember pounding on the pavement saying ‘this cannot be happening.’”

The aunt also told the Daily News that Sebastian has been having some breathing problems since last month after getting a cold.
