An innocent eight-year-old Washington D.C. girl was shot in the chest and now police have arrested two people in connection with the shooting.

According to CBS DC, police arrested and charged 19-year-old Karie Brown and 21-year-old Demtrius Patten with assault and intent to kill.

Police responded to a call in Southeast Washington on Friday afternoon and found little Makayla Darden suffering from a gunshot wound in her upper left chest. She was transported to a nearby hospital.

NBC News4 has reported that family members said that Darden, a third grader, was walking home from her aunt's residence to her mother's and was hit near a playground.

Charging documents on the two suspects said that they told police they went to an apartment building to buy drugs and the child opened the door for them. At some point after that there was a struggle and shots were fired. But the documents go on to say that authorities did not find any money on either of them to corroborate their story.

Both men have prior convictions in the D.C. area.
